The HALO connect programme gives young people a unique opportunity to connect with other young people from diverse backgrounds and learn new skills enabling them to engage creatively and critically within their community. This series of workshops is not just about equipping highly effective youth advocates it is about empowering ‘all’ young people with the skills to make meaningful decisions within their own lives and their communities.
In terms of what works for young people that will lead them to take on decision making roles The Foundation for Young Australians (2003) assert there are three key elements:
• Meaning: doing something that has a bigger purpose and that they believe in. • Control: making decisions, being heard and having the skills to see a task through • Connectedness: working with others and being part of something bigger.
For best possible outcomes the programme will always aim to connect participants from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds. The result is a wonderful process that enhances empathy, personal strength, understanding, patience and tolerance for others.
